Everyday Home Air Conditioning Mistakes
June 28, 2019
The modern air conditioner has not been around all that long. Yet we have come to expect it as a fundamental part of our everyday lives and something we take for granted. Especially in Darwin, the air conditioning is always there in the background but is not something that we concern ourselves with until it is suddenly not working. Most repairs come about from a simple mistake, but Advanced Clean Air have a few tips on how to avoid them.
Not Cleaning Your Filters
The filters are probably the most important component to prevent build up inside your unit. This however means they can get blocked quite easily. If not dealt with, this could mean unwanted particles depositing and building up inside your system which will decrease the expected lifespan of your unit and could even affect the health of you and your family, or your air conditioner is forced to work harder which leads to a loss in efficiency and higher electricity bills. Fortunately, this is a quick and easy fix. Filters should be checked and cleaned regularly. The more often they are cleaned- the less likely there is to be a build up in the unit. We recommend cleaning the monthly and can set you up with a monthly reminder email!
Not Keeping Up with Maintenance
We’ve all had a piece of electric equipment that we have used until it is practically falling apart. Most of the time this is okay because we know how much we have used it and the exact amount of care we have given it. But for some reason we do not have the same consideration for our air conditioning units. They work all day every day for years and then the second there is a problem we get frustrated with them as if it is an ongoing thing. In order to ensure that your air conditioning unit is efficient and gets the longest life possible regular maintenance is necessary. By waiting until the unit gives up to call a professional you have already left it too long and you will be looking at more money and time to repair it.
While the filters are something you should clean regularly yourself, we also advise you get your unit professionally cleaned
every 6-12 months. This will ensure that the unit is clear of all blockages and that the air circulating is safe to everyone in your household. This also gives the technician the opportunity to identify any other issues that may occur down the line, hopefully reducing any repair bills.
Ignoring Leaks
Leaks can be an indication that there is something more serious wrong with your air conditioner, or it might be a way to tell you it’s time for a clean. Either way it is not something that should be ignored. A lot of the calls we receive every week are for leaking air conditioners and the majority of time the unit just requires a clean. If there is a blockage in your unit the water can not drain out the rear so leaks from the front of the unit. While it will just need a clean the amount of build up may have damaged some of the internal components, so it is better to carry out regular maintenance to avoid a costly repair bill further down the line.
Leaks can also indicate gas issues, which can be more serious and will need to be attended to by a professional. The longer a gas leak is left unattended to, the costlier the repair will be, sometimes even leading to a replacement unit.

The first sign many people notice is a musty, mouldy odour. If you do a thorough clean of your office or commercial space and the smell is still there, it’s time to check your vents. Getting your Air Conditioning Contractor to remove the covers and take a quick look inside may confirm the issue, especially if you see mould or notice a stronger smell in that area. If the scent is stronger, but you can’t see the mould, then the growth is possibly further in the ducts. Another sign of a mould issue is the sudden onset of allergy symptoms. If you or a co-worker notices burning eyes, scratchy throat, or a runny nose that gets better when you leave the office, there could be an issue. Arranging for your HVAC technician to check your filters should be the first step. If it needs to be changed they can install a new one. If the symptoms continue they can do a quick check of your vents and a visual check of your ducts. Inspecting your duct work can also provide clues to a possible mould problem. An Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) can check for signs of moisture build-up, such as condensation, dark spots, or actual leaks. Mould needs water to grow, so any signs of condensation or leaking could indicate a growth hot spot. Duct cleaning and coating is a specialised job and as such the majority of HVAC companies sub-contract duct cleaning and coating out to companies like ours. At Advanced Air we have our Air Systems Cleaning Specialist on staff ready to undertake any duct inspection, cleaning or coating project you may have.
