3 Simple Air Conditioner Checks to do before Christmas.

Christmas is nearly here and this year more people then ever will be spending it at home. With this in mind the last thing you want to happen is for your air conditioners to fail during one of the hottest periods of the year. Advanced Air have compiled some simple checks you can do at home to help avoid a break down or avoid a service call during the holidays.

1. Clean the filters.

While this seems logical, the majority of people only think to clean their filters once the air-conditioner isn't cooling the room down like it used to. So, to have your air conditioners working as efficiently as possible (without getting them professionally cleaned and serviced) make sure you clean the filters before you break for Christmas. 2. Check your remote settings.

Make sure your remote is on the right settings. "Auto" mode and "Auto" fan speed are a recipe for disaster in the Darwin climate so make sure your remote is not set to Auto. At Advanced Air we recommend keeping your air conditioner on the "Cool" setting and a fan speed that is desirable as long as it's not auto. If you like it running as hard as possible all of the time set it to "high", but if you like the fan speed a little lower but would like it to cool the room down quickly set it to "medium" fan and use the "powerful" button on start up. This will allow your aircon to run as hard as possible until it gets your room to the desired temperature. Once at the right temperature it will back the unit off to the settings you have selected.

3. Check the outdoor unit to make sure it isn't obstructed.

A blocked condenser will cause your unit to run at a higher pressure than designed and not allow it to cool as it should. Make sure that there is nothing directly in front of the fan or behind the outdoor unit covering the condenser coil. While you are checking if the condenser is obstructed, make sure to take a look at the coil condition. If you don't have anything physically blocking the outdoor unit but the condenser coil itself is blocked (pet hair / dirt from construction taking place near by) it can have the same effect on the efficiency of the unit.

Yes, mould can grow in ducted systems in Darwin

The first sign many people notice is a musty, mouldy odour. If you do a thorough clean of your office or commercial space and the smell is still there, it’s time to check your vents. Repair or Replace Your Aircon

When do you know if it's time to replace your air conditioner, or if its worth repairing?

There are a few things to consider when thinking about repairing or replacing your air conditioner, with the main one being "how old is the unit?". As air conditioners get to the 12 year old mark a number of brands start to discontinue parts meaning that even if a technician attends and finds the issue to be repairable, you may not be able to access parts. This could be a costly start to getting a brand new unit by the time you have paid for the call out and the technicians labour and waited to hear back from the company with regards to the part. Most reputable companies offer free quotes on new or replacement installations and if you know the unit is extremely old, a free quote could save you a bit of money. But keep in mind that a company won't offer free quotes on repairing a unit as for that to happen there is fault finding etc. that takes place and could take up to an hour and a half. If you are after a free quote for repairing an air conditioner you are asking the company to work for nothing.

Is the unit under 5 years old? The top brands all carry a 5 year parts and labour warranty meaning if your unit is under the 5 year period and has been properly maintained and there is an issue it will be covered under the warranty. But remember if the unit only requires a professional clean (not covered under warranty) or has a refrigerant leak due to an installer error and the installer isn't the warranty agent you may be charged by the warranty agent for their attendance.

Another thing to consider is if your current unit is an inverter or not. The inverter technology has come a long way and the savings in power could save you money in the long run when thinking about repairing an older non-inverter air conditioner. The top brand air conditioners have all been primarily inverters for the last 10 years or so, but every year a new unit comes out the technology is better along with the energy savings.

With the above said anything around the 8 years or below is normally worth repairing, and as you start to creep up to 10 and 12 years you should be thinking about a free quote to replace rather than a call out and repair bill only to find out parts aren't available. Or that parts are available but they're ridiculously expensive for a unit that probably only has a couple of years left in it.

When getting a free quote for a new or replacement air conditioner there are three main questions to ask any company.

1. What is the warranty period of the unit? Even some of the cheaper brands have extended their warranty from 3 years to 5, so if they are quoting anything with a warranty under 5 years we would recommend avoiding it!

2. Does the company also back up the 5 year parts and labour warranty of the product with their own 5 year installation warranty? A lot of installers will only carry a 1 year installation guarantee, but you want to make sure that if there is an issue in that 5 year period you can rely on them to re-attend and sort out the problem.

3. Does the company installing the air conditioner also warrant the brand? This is a biggie because we've seen on a number of occasions where the installer and a warranty agent get into a dispute as to who should cover the work. If an installer makes an error on a flare (not covered under warranty) you could be up for the bill from the warranty agent for attending and fixing the problem. Alternatively if you want to get your installer back to fix the problem you are still likely to receive a call out fee from the warranty agent and depending on how busy the installer is you could be waiting some time to get them out. This back and forth can become extremely frustrating when you pay for a quality product and just want it fixed! That is why we always recommend to make sure the installer is also the warranty agent for the product they are supplying so there is no excuses if an issue ever does arise.

The Build-Up is fast approaching and we have put together some helpful tips to make sure your aircons are ready to keep you cool this sweat season.

Tip 1 - Check your filters.

Keeping on top of your aircon filters is one of the most beneficial things you can do to help keep your running costs down and prolong the time between professional cleans. When your filters are blocked your aircon overworks and under performs costing you more to run as the airflow drops significantly and making you think the unit isn't working properly. This generally means you will drop the temperature of the aircon which then adds to the energy consumption. Tip 2 - Check your coil.

While you've got your filters out have a good look at the condition of the unit. If you notice it is dirty a professional clean may be needed to get your air-conditioner back to it's best for the build up. Remember, a dirty aircon can increase running costs by up-to 30%

Tip 3 - Check your remote settings.

We go to several call outs a week where the remote settings are incorrect. If you replace the batteries in the remote it will go back to it's factory settings. Factory is normally set to "Auto" mode and "Auto" fan speed. Here in Darwin there is no worse combination for your aircon then those to settings. It tends to cycle your indoor and outdoor unit between no fan and full fan, as well as your condensing unit in and out. Your aircon could be working fine and all of a sudden you wonder if it's even on. The best remote setting for Darwin are the "Cool" mode and any fan speed other than auto. Tip 4 - Make sure the outdoor units are clear of any obstructions.

If it is obstructed it may recycle the hot air back through itself making it run at a higher pressure, putting more strain on the unit and not allowing it to run properly. This could then lead the air conditioner to go out on fault or even possible blow the condenser coil due to a higher pressure and you could end up with a heavy repair bill.

Correct Remote Settings for Darwin

When you get into your new property, or have a brand new unit installed you will find that each air conditioner comes with a number of different possible settings on the remote. We currently attend to at least two call outs per week that are fixed with the correct remote control settings.

The two main things that allow your air conditioner to constantly cool with a set fan speed are your – mode and fan speed buttons. Auto setting is something we try to avoid on remote controls as this tends to cycle the indoor and outdoor units in and out. You will feel like the room is nice and cool one minute, and then be asking yourself if it is on the next.

Mode – We always advise to run on the cool setting as Dry and Auto tend to do the same thing, which is cycle in and out not giving you a constant cooling experience. On some Remotes the Cool setting will be a small icon of an icicle, and on others it will actually say “cool”.

Fan Speed – This gives you the option for low, medium, high and auto. Any setting is fine other than the auto setting as this will give you a continual air flow coming from your air conditioner. So set your desired fan speed by hitting the “fan speed button” until the right fan speed comes up.

It can be difficult to distinguish the different problems within your air conditioner. So how do you know if it has gotten to the stage where you need a professional to have a look at it? Before calling a contractor there are a few simple things you can look at to avoid a hefty repair bill.

Have you checked the Filters?

It is something we should all be doing a lot more often than we probably do. It is recommended that you take the filters out and give them a good clean at least once a month. However, if it is an air conditioner that is in constant use, you have pets inside or it is in a particularly dusty area this should increase to every 2 weeks. Are your remote settings correct?

You cannot imagine the number of service calls attended to every week that are simply air conditioners with the wrong remote settings or no batteries. You may think by turning the air conditioner down to the lowest possible temperature you will cool the space effectively. Air conditioner not turning on?

Can mould grow in my air-conditioner?

Moulds are fungi, like mushrooms, which are present at low levels both indoors and outdoors. The most common mould we find in the majority of air conditioners we clean here in Darwin is black mould.

You can be exposed to mould on a daily basis without harm as mould needs organic materials like paper, wood or *dirt and moisture* to grow. This is what makes your air conditioner a perfect breeding ground for mould. To put it simply your air-conditioner is like a vacuum cleaner. It sucks the air in through the top of the unit, through the filter, the coil, over the fan then back into the room at a nice cool temperature. Eventually as the filters build up with dirt, some of it pushes through into the coil where it gets caught on the fins thanks to the condensation occurring.

If your air-conditioner has mould it can give off a musty smell and release countless tiny spores into the room every time it is turned on. If the mould is not properly cleaned, high levels of mould spores may be a risk to your health if you are sensitive. You can be exposed by inhaling, eating or touching mould spores. Many people that suffer symptoms from mould don’t even realise it, instead believing their symptoms are from a cold or hay fever.

2017 Bigger and Better NT Home Improvement Scheme

The new Labour government have listened to the community and yesterday announced it will bring back the NT Home Improvement Scheme after the success seen for small businesses and home owners in 2016. The new scheme has an added value of up to $4000 and home owners who have accessed the scheme previously are also eligible to receive up to $2000.

Under the new scheme up to 50% can be used towards the cost of goods and materials (previously only 30%). Also an additional $15 million budget has been set in addition to the $11 million already spent on the previous scheme.

Home owner applications commence on the 20th of February and the scheme is set to run until the 31st of December 2017 or until funding is exhausted. With the success of the previous scheme, seeing $11 million used in only 4 months, the likelihood that this will reach the 31st of December is not high. So be sure to get those jobs you have been putting off into action and get your local tradie in to help you take advantage of the new scheme.

NT GOVERNMENT SMART ENERGY GRANT STARTS 2 JANUARY 2018

How it Works!

The Smart Energy Grant will be a voucher system with the NT Government paying 50% of the bill up to $1000. To be eligible to avail of this grant you must currently reside in the NT and own a residential or investment property. If you are a member of the NT pensioner and carer’s scheme you will only be asked to contribute 25%. This mean it has never been more affordable to undertake improvements to your home to be more energy efficient and reduce that power bill we all dread so much.

How do I know if I qualify for a New Air Conditioner?

NT Gov Energy Efficiency Scheme

The NT Government have just announced in their 'Roadmap to Renewable's' report that the Smart Energy Grant will start on the 2nd of January 2018.

This means if you have an air conditioner 6 years or older the government will match you dollar for dollar up to $1000.00 in order to help you replace it with a brand new energy efficient Inverter unit. The government have a 4 million dollar budget for this program, and if the NT Home Improvement Scheme was anything to go by, this money will be spent well before the January 2019 deadline. The NT Government have also advised that this is on a 'first in first served' basis and to allow a month for voucher acceptance, so don't leave it to long if you are considering applying for this energy saving scheme.

If your air conditioner is older than 6 years old and you own a home in the Northern Territory (including investment properties) you should be eligible to receive the Smart Energy Grant.

$1000 Smart Energy Grant Now Open!

The 2018 Smart Energy Grant applications are now open. As part of this energy efficiency scheme you can upgrade your old, energy guzzling air conditioners to energy efficient inverter systems, allowing you up to $1000 off your installation package.

The government recently released the new Smart Energy Grant as part of their "roadmap to renewables" which has committed to adopt a target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. The Smart Energy Grants, will be run through a voucher system on a 50-50 co-contribution basis for up to $1,000 to help owners of residential or investment properties undertake energy efficiency measures to their homes.

The government have allowed four million dollars for the smart energy grant which they have given an expiry of January 2019, but after the home improvement scheme funding was spent in half of the available time frame last year, putting this off could see you missing out on up to $1000 through this new scheme.

Why does my air conditioner smell bad?

Firstly, we have to determine the type of smell coming from your air-conditioner. The two most common smells we take questions about here at Advanced Clean Air are –

Musty or “dirty sock” smell, which is usually caused by mould, mildew and bacteria build up from inside your air conditioner. Additionally, dirty filters can also give off a musty smell.

A rotten egg smell, which usually means there is a dead animal inside your unit. The most common cause of a rotten egg smell is geckos living inside air conditioners where they often die and begin to decompose. That’s why when you turn on your air conditioner, a horrible odour circulates throughout your home.

If you have a musty smell coming from your air conditioner you likely have one of these problems:

Mould on your evaporator coils
Mould on your scroll fan and casing
A clogged drain/condensate line

So how and why does mould grow inside your air conditioners?

As warm air passes over those cold coils (radiator looking thing underneath your filters), condensation occurs. And if there’s any dirt or dust present it provides the perfect breeding grounds for mould, mildew and bacteria. This gunky mix normally loves the damp drain pans of your air conditioner and can grow over the drain outlet causing your air conditioner to leak.

Signs of a dirty evaporator coil and scroll fan:

Visible signs of dirt, mould/mildew build-up
Ice forming on coils
Weaker than normal air flow

How to get the error code out of a Panasonic split system

When your air conditioner does not operate and has the timer / operation lights flashing it is out on fault and it will have an error code that we can extract from the unit.

To get the fault code out of a wall mounted Panasonic split system unit follow the below steps. This will help us determine the problem, and if we have the parts in stock relating to the error / fault code for your model, we can bring them on our initial site visit and get your air conditioner repaired straight away.

Step 1

Locate the “check” button at the bottom of the remote.

Step 2

Press and Hold down the “check” button for between 5 and 10 seconds until you see two lines appear as shown in the picture below.

Step 3

Point the remote at the air conditioner and scroll through the fault codes by pushing the “timer up” or “timer down” buttons as shown below.

As you scroll through, the air conditioner will make a continuous beeping noise when you have pushed the correct fault code (remember to make sure you are pointing the remote at the air conditioner).

When you have got the correct fault code please write it down and let our office know. Alternatively you can view the Panasonic Error Code here .

The remote will return to normal after two minutes. This is the quickest way to help us get your air conditioner repaired.

Remember that if your air conditioner beeps with "H00" it thinks it is under normal operating conditions and you may want to check out what you can do before calling an air conditioning company .

Don't forget to make sure your air conditioner is cleaned annually to avoid a "H99" error code.

Make sure you are using the Correct Mode on your air conditioning remote.

As most Territorian's know, it is not the heat it is the humidity. Before the rain kicks in the humidity can get up to 95%. Let’s face it this is what we dread most about the Wet Season. While it is super humid you may find it useful to try the “Dry” mode on your air-conditioner. This will take some of the moisture out of the air. Helping to make you feel a lot more comfortable. But remember, the dry setting will cycle your unit, and if you feel uncomfortable at any time we would recommend sticking to the "cool" setting. This couldn’t be easier. For split system air conditioning the filters are mainly located at the front of the unit. They can be accessed by lifting the front cover and gently sliding the filters out of the unit using the tabs provided. Once you have removed the filters you should check them for any damage. The smallest hole/tear could render the filter useless and this in turn will increase the amount of build-up that has made its way through to the rest of your air conditioner. These are easily replaceable so don’t worry. Better you have to replace the filter now than the whole unit later.

If there is no damage to the filters they will need to be washed. The easiest way to do this is probably with a hose. Remember to hose the filter down from the under side to prevent anything getting stuck in the filters. Once you have done this it is as easy as leaving them to dry before refitting them the same way.
